THE DEN MOTHER
THE QUEEN BITCH
Similar in spirit to films such as Jaws, The Edge, Aliens or Moby Dick, The Den Mother is the ultimate beast, our resident queen bitch that has been poisoned and abused over a majority of her unusually-long life. When Laura accidentally stumbles into her cave, she's forced to temporarily take one of her cherished cubs hostage to allow her and Thomas to escape with their lives. It's a costly choice that sets in motion a vendetta that will carry through until the ultimate showdown.
SPFX / VISUAL EFFECTS
Bringing the cougars to life onscreen should be a combination of practical effects, computers generated imagery and real cougars in those rare, but important moments when such visual detail benefits the story and can be safely performed without danger to the production or animals. Many of the encounter sequences have been designed to avoid seeing the animalism in full, both to increase tension and make the challenge of bringing the animals to life possible. All while creating a more immersive moviegoing experience reminiscent of true 80s cinema. In the case of The Den Mother, the wonders of CG technology will be embraced. To maximize impact, much of her appearance won't be revealed until the final showdown.
Cougars are natural creatures, yet violent by nature. They are extraordinarily quiet hunters, able to detect frequencies in the ultra-sonic range, and track blood over great distances. If they want to sneak up on you, they can, providing us with a unique tactic for audiences looking for some fun scares.
Cougar is an adventure thrill-ride with horror undertones.
Wherever possible, wounds and mauling effects (ie. gunshots, slashes and scratches, blood mist packs) will be handled practically, resulting in a more textural viewing experience.
CATERWAULING and sounds
Cougars make a variety of distinctive sounds, such as whistling, clicking, growling and caterwauling.
